How We Help ~ At School

We work with closely with family members and care givers to help change children's behavior and help them succeed at school.

We offer school based prevention services, consultations and on site preschool and school aged programming.

It is easier to intervene when a child is young than when they are teenagers or adults, when thinking patterns and values are already in place. We work to stabilize behaviors so our children are able to successfully function in school and in the community.

Outpatient Family Services

Outpatient Family Services is a family-centered counseling service for children, ages 2-18 and their families. We also offer psychiatric services to children. Families and caregivers are encouraged to be actively involved in the treatment of the children.

The children and families we serve are typically experiencing conflicts, behavioral problems at home or in school; anger managemetnproblems, physical aggression or other problems which may be disruptive at home, school or in the community.

Prevention Services

In addition to treatment, we provide Prevention Services in elementary and middle schools through a United Way grant.

Services are available in English and Spanish; there is no cost to families.

Early Childhood Mental Health

Prevention and intervention are the primary goals of Early Childhood Mental Health. Our programs are Early Childhood Mental Health - Consultation, Early Childhood Mental Health - Treatment, Helping the Noncompliant Child and Incredible Years Parenting Program.

The Early Childhood Mental Health-Consultation program provides mental health consultation services to children ages 0-6, their parents and teachers in over 27 childcare centers in the community as well as the Early Childhood Family and Education Center through the Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Our consultation services include child specific, classroom and programmatic consultation. The consultants are trained to use two evidenced based programs: The Incredible Years Social Skills groups and the DECA, a social emotional assessment tool and classroom program. Our consultants have either a bachelors or masters degree in early childhood or a mental health field. They must have experience in both early childhood and mental health. They provide social emotional trainings to the staff, conduct parent consultation meetings and do social emotional groups with the children.

The Early Childhood Mental Health –Treatment therapy program will provide individual, family and group outpatient therapy to children ages 2-7 and their families. Our ECMH-T therapists have been trained in the following evidenced based treatment modalities: Parent Child Interaction Therapy, play therapy, family therapy, EMDR, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other modalities to increase the mental wellness of those they serve. Each ECMH-T therapist must have a master’s degree in social work, counseling or a related field as well as a current Ohio license in counseling or social work.

Helping the Noncompliant Child is a 10 session in-home parent education program. This evidenced based program consists of a clinician working with the parent and child to increase positive parenting skills and decrease negative behaviors in children. This program meets twice per week.

The Incredible Years Parenting Group is a 12 week strength based parent training intervention focused on strengthening parenting skills and developing the parent child relationship. Our groups are open to up to 15 parents each session. We provide a meal, free childcare and transportation if needed.

ECMH staff and the therapeutic puppets are used as part of the Incredible Years programming.

Therapeutic Preschool Program

St. Vincent Family Center Therapeutic Preschool Program is a year-round program for children 3 to 6 years of age. We work with children who have severe behavioral, emotional and/or social challenges. Our staff works closely with parents/care-givers to identify child and family strengths.
The average classroom has 9 to 11 children with two staff members in each classroom. Currently there are seven classrooms; two of the classrooms are provided in conjunction with Columbus Public Schools. The goal is to help children learn more positive behaviors, social and problem-solving skills.

The children we serve typically have emotional and/or behavioral problems; have had a difficult time in a regular day care, preschool, head start program or kindergarten setting and have a full scale IQ of 70 or above.

School Age Programming

Therapeutic School Age Program

Children served through the Therapeutic School Age Program have usually exhausted all other educational alternatives.

We work with children who are having problems in school due to severe behavioral challenges. Parents/caregivers work closely with us to help children return to a regular school setting.

We help children and their families learn to manage the children's behaviors so they are able to positively function at school, home and in the community. The goal of the program is for children, once returned to a regular school setting, to successfully maintain their behavior and academic performance.

The children we serve typically have emotional and/or behavioral problems which may cause academic problems; have a history of not responding to traditional treatment and have a full scale IQ of 70 or above.
